Dear Senator, Feeding America’s latest Map the Meal Gap report confirms what so many in our community already know: Hunger remains a crisis in every corner of the country. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is our most effective tool to combat food insecurity. It provides timely, targeted grocery benefits and helps ensure families with children, older adults, people with disabilities and workers in low-wage or unstable jobs can keep food on the table. Cutting SNAP benefits would only worsen hunger and hardship in communities like ours. As your constituent, I strongly urge you to reject any legislation that would cut SNAP funding or its ability to respond quickly in times of need: - Reject any proposal to shift a portion of program costs to states. Most states simply do not have the resources to absorb these costs and would be forced to reduce benefits, restrict participation or both. All families should be able to afford a nutritious diet, no matter where they live! - Don’t add more burdensome red tape like extra documentation around work--most SNAP participants who can work already do! Eighty-six percent of SNAP households with working-age adults who are not receiving disability benefits report earnings during the year. - Protect future updates to the Thrifty Food Plan so SNAP can remain strong and responsive in tough economic times.
